Effective Solid Waste Treatment

The STI medical waste treatment system is designed to efficiently and safely manage solid waste using advanced engineering to reduce costs and minimize environmental impact. STIs can be used for:

  • Disposal of red bag waste in medical facilities
  • Devitalization of bioengineered crops in agricultural research
  • Marijuana disposal
  • Treatment of regulated garbage at ports and borders
  • Commercial processing in centralized/third-party waste
  • Treating contaminated laboratory waste

How it Works

The STI Commercial Medical Waste Treatment System has all the advantages and none of the drawbacks of existing products on the market. The residue from the STI System is decontaminated, generally classified as municipal waste, and ready for landfill disposal or recycling.

Step 1

Regulated medical waste (RMW), infectious waste/ clinical waste (including animal bedding) and import waste are loaded into the system using wheelie bins or reusable tubs. Contents may include bags, boxes, sharps containers, or surgical trace carts.

Step 2

Air is drawn from the feed hopper through HEPA filters, to capture potential aerosolized pathogens that may be released during the waste dumping and shredding process.

Step 3

Containerized waste drops into a heavy duty shredder and steam is directly impinged onto the bags and sharps containers prior to and during shredding. Steam automatically decontaminates the system shredder during operation.

Step 4

Shredded waste enters the steam auger chamber where low pressure steam is injected through multiple ports immediately bringing all material to proper treatment conditions.

Step 5

The distal portion of the STI System steam jacket provides continued heating of the waste. Waste is treated for a minimum of 60 minutes prior to discharge from the auger. The Low Pressure Flash-Off Chamber allows sterile condensate to vent to the atmosphere, reducing water content by ~10%.

Step 6

The residue exits the end of the continuous feed steam conveyor (auger) into a standard self-contained compactor and may be recycled or disposed of as municipal waste.

Closed-Loop, Continuous Feed System

  1. Protects operators and ensures efficient processing of biohazardous waste
  2. Passes waste through an integrated shredder to create uniform particles and de-identify sensitive information
  3. Treats waste under low-pressure steam until required treatment parameters are reached
  4. Transfers treated waste into a compactor to reduce volume

Regulated Treatment Built to Your Needs

BioSAFE STIs can be custom-built to meet the needs of your facility, but they all share a standard set of features:

  • Closed-loop processing with HEPA filtration
  • Custom-engineered integrated shredding
  • Low-pressure steam treatment
  • Simple two-button operation

Engineered for Efficiency

The STI system offers a range of benefits for solid waste treatment. With its efficient and
eco-friendly technology, it provides cost savings, improves operational efficiency, and
ensures environmental protection.

Airborne Pathogens – The inclusion of a negative air pressure and HEPA filter system combats the potential release of airborne pathogens during the automated loading process.

Odor Control – The automated, patented use of a cleanser acts as a deodorant for the waste stream.

Steam Treatment – Integral shredding (not pre-shredding) destroys the waste containers, bags, boxes and sharps. Shredding maximizes the waste surface area, exposing all material to direct steam impingement. Efficacy is assured under all circumstances by maintaining boiling temperatures of waste and dwell times ≥ 60 minutes, two times longer than a conventional autoclave temperature cycle.

Validation – Accurate validation testing is achieved by introducing a “carrier” holding self-contained Biological Indicators (challenge spores) after the shredding process.

The bacterial spores actually travel with the waste during the treatment process, further validating parametric monitoring of the system.

Emissions – Operating temperatures are deliberately set below the threshold temperature of the volatilization of plastics, eliminating problems associated with V.O.C. emissions.

No Cold Spots or Blockages – The STI BioSAFE system’s integration of shredding and direct steam impingement ensures maximum exposure of all contaminated waste surfaces to the proper treatment conditions. This eliminates cold spots or blockages that can be associated with conventional autoclaves. The STI BioSAFE steam treatment system even treats un-shredded test tubes or syringes unlike ozone/gaseous treatment systems.

Lower Ownership Cost

Average total ownership and operating costs for BioSAFE STIs is between $0.10 and $0.12 – 3 times less expensive than typical third-party hauling and disposal fees.

Lower Waste-Hauling Costs

90% bulk-reduced waste minimizes landfill impact and hauling costs of treated materials, lowering tipping fees and hauling charges tenfold.

Lower Utility Bills

The continuous feed design of BioSAFE STIs dramatically reduces labor requirements.

BioSAFE STIs use low-pressure steam coupled with a hibernation mode to minimize utility costs.

Lower Maintenance Costs

BioSAFE STIs are engineered to be rugged and simple to operate, reducing system downtime and the need for specialized operators.

Any facility generating regulated waste, or otherwise regulated biohazardous solid waste will require some type of waste disposal solution. Smaller facilities often choose to use third-party waste haulers. For larger facilities or for third-party waste processing plants, having an on-site solution can offer the most cost-effective solution. We have installed BioSAFE STI systems in:

  • Hospitals
  • Medical Clinics
  • Third-Party Waste Processing Facilities
  • Agricultural Research Facilities
  • Biopharmaceutical Research Facilities
  • Marijuana Operations

If your facility generates more than 350,000 lbs of regulated waste per year, contact us to see how much you could save with a BioSAFE STI.

STIs are available in several levels of waste processing capacity.

  • 150lbs/hr – Perfect for facilities generating less than ~300,000 lbs per year.
  • 300lbs/hr – For facilities processing between 300,000 and 600,000 lbs per year.
  • 600-2000lbs/hr – For facilities processing 600,000 and 4,000,000 lbs per year.
  • 3000lbs/hr – For facilities generating more than 4,000,000 lbs per year.

Regular maintenance is recommended to ensure optimal performance of the STI product. Due to the rugged engineering of the STI, the maintenance intervals are 2 to 3 times longer than other similar treatment technologies.

Yes, the STI system can be customized to meet specific regulatory and facility requirements. Talk to a BioSAFE representative and let us know what customizations are needed at your facility.

Like all BioSAFE technologies, our STI systems are engineered for fewer breakdowns, lower maintenance costs, and a life cycle of up to 20 years.

Step 1

Waste is weighed and the data is logged and stored for regulatory compliance. Waste is then loaded into the lift enclosure and the operator starts the load cycle. A roll-up door closes off the lift enclosure, which is held under negative pressure directional air. This air is then passed through a HEPA filter, ensuring facility and operator safety.

Step 2

Regulated medical waste, infectious waste/ clinical waste (including animal bedding) and import waste are loaded into the system using wheelie bins or reusable tubs. Contents may include bags, boxes, sharps containers, and surgical trace carts.

Step 3

Waste is then elevated and dumped over our custom-engineered, 4-shaft shredder.
While being impinged with low-pressure steam, the material is shredded, maximizing exposed surface area and destroying all protected health information.

Step 4

The waste then drops down into the base of the processing auger where a small amount of sodium hypochlorite is also metered into the waste stream.

The shredded waste is then pulled up from the base of the auger by the internal screw. The screw slowly conveys the waste through the auger. Low-pressure steam is directly injected into the waste, heating the material to a local boiling point.

The material is held at treatment temperature as it continues through the auger.

Step 5

Additional waste can be loaded into the STI while a load is being treated, enabling truly continuous operations.
